Roy Rogers was the King of the Cowboys in old American western movies and later on television, but when I was 6 years old, he was also king of my heart! I wanted nothing more than to put on my six guns and western hat, then jump on Trigger with Roy and ride off into the sunset. Kind of odd for a little girl but then life's circumstances were tumultuous for me at the time. My dad had been burned badly in a fire and was hospitalized for a great deal of the time during this period. When he was home, he was in tremendous pain, medicated on morphine and usually in a foul mood.
But I had a great "replacement" dad for this time. He was always smiling, wore a white cowboy hat, six-guns and rode a beautiful palomino horse named Trigger. He taught me right from wrong and some fifty years later, I'm still trying to live up to the example he set.
